Handmade paper is an engaging mix of rich texture and free form that often belies its weight while it is able to be manipulated into forms that may appear industrial or organic. I often mix the “organic” (like pine needles) into the pulp and combine twigs, wire, copper, tacks, etc. with the paper that is formed. The fascination I have in natural forms & structures (I'll be the one you might see studying the interesting patterns & textures of the bark or the leaves of a tree) inspires the work.
Inasmuch as I sketch out an idea, my work is often formed in a spontaneous gesture. Pouring pulp into shape and design, letting the piece dictate how it evolves is engrossing as it is tactile. Once the pieces are dry I am challenged by the assemblage process. To create a work that can be suspended or placed requires different skills with each piece. I consider it all a process of discovery, invention and never-ending possibility.
